Akineton advertisement, 1969. Hospital & Community Psychiatry, Vol. 20, No. 5. when a tranquilized patient ~ gets drug-induced parkinsonism ~ you can stop tranquilizers, or... ~ just add AKINETON Extrapyramidal reactions, a frequent concomitant of psychotherapeutic drug treatment, can sometimes be controlled by the reduction or discontinuation of tranquilizer dosage. But tranquilizer therapy can often be maintained at therapeutic levels by adding Akineton to the drug regimen. In a recent study, Akineton relieved parkinsonian symptoms induced by high phenothiazine administration in all 49 patients studied and many of the patients remained symptom-free at the low dosage of one half tablet twice daily.(1) Another recent study, comparing Akineton with other leading medications used for the treatment of drug-induced reactions, confirms its effectiveness at low daily milligram dosage.(2) And the smaller Akineton dosages may result in fewer side effects and lower cost than other adjunctive drugs.(3) So if drug-induced parkinsonism threatens to interrupt tranquilizer therapy in your patients, you can stop tranquilizers, or... just add Akineton. SIDE EFFECTS: Minimal (primarily dry mouth, blurred vision and occasionally drowsiness). Short periods of euphoria and disorientation may be noticed in some patients. Caution should be observed in patients with manifest glaucoma. Occasionally, a decrease in urinary flow has been noted. With parenteral administration, mild transient postural hypotension may occur.
